South Tuscany

Days 5 & 6

Thursday (Wednesday was in Siena)

Above:   The view from the trail.

In Pre-Roman times the Etruscans had established a fairly extensive settlement in the area close to our hotel.  Archaeological digs are adding to our knowledge of this culture.

Our "long march..."   In the morning we start out near Pienza for a 6 1/2 km walk to Monticchiello.

In the town we have a wonderful lunch complete with important hydration components.

After lunch the stalwarts (aka the foolhardy) walk 7 1/2 km to Montepulciano.  The hardest part is, of course, the final uphill leg because like all medieval, Tuscan towns, it is built at the top of a hill.  Some serious rehydration therapy was needed at the end.

The day ended with the final dinner - good as always.

Below:   another view from the trail - walking tours have their advantages....
